Free home adaptations and support are available to many people living with arthritis. These adaptations can make the home safer and help people stay independent.

Many people are missing out

Around 17 million people in the UK are living with arthritis and related conditions. Yet Versus Arthritis says that 80% of people with arthritis who are eligible for support are missing out on the aids and adaptations available to them — support that can have a genuinely life-changing effect.

Installing the right equipment and adaptations can help people avoid falls, and therefore injuries and hospital admissions. Other equipment — for dressing or cooking, for example — can help people stay independent. As well as improving lives, these adaptations reduce pressure on, and save money for, the NHS and the social care system.

About osteoarthritis

The symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain, stiffness and problems moving the joint. Some people also have swelling, tenderness or a grating sensation when moving. Severity varies greatly from person to person and between different joints — for some it is mild and comes and goes, while others experience continuous, severe problems that make everyday activities difficult. Any joint can be affected, but the knees, hips and small joints of the hands are most common. See your GP if you have persistent symptoms, so they can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe any necessary treatment.
