Scammers frequently target older people, and their tactics are constantly evolving. Knowing how they operate — and following a few simple rules — can help keep you or a loved one safe.

A common example: the "TV provider discount" scam

One widespread phone scam involves fraudsters cold-calling and claiming to be from a television service provider offering a discount. Victims are told their subscription needs renewing, or that their equipment has expired and is due an upgrade. To "process the discount", the caller asks the victim to confirm their bank details — and sometimes even requests scanned identification documents such as a passport. Later, the victim discovers their provider never called, and that money has been taken from their account. Reports suggest people aged over 66 are the most heavily targeted.

The rules that keep you safe

  • Don't assume a call or email is genuine. Just because someone knows your name, address or other basic details, it doesn't mean they are legitimate. Criminals exploit the names of well-known companies to appear convincing.
  • Never be rushed. A genuine company won't force you into a financial decision on the spot. Be wary of any pressure to buy quickly, and don't hesitate to question uninvited approaches.
  • Stay in control. Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. If in doubt, hang up and contact the company yourself using a number from a bank statement or bill — never one the caller gives you.
