Paying for care

As care needs grow, so do the costs — and money can get tight. There’s a range of benefits available to older people and those receiving care, and a good deal of it goes unclaimed. This free, independent tool tells you what you may be entitled to in just a few minutes.

A quick way to check what you can claim.

The Independent Age benefit checker is a simple, free-to-use, independent and impartial online tool. You tick the statements that apply to your situation, answer a few short questions, and it tells you which benefits you may be eligible to claim.

Even if you think you’re already getting everything you’re entitled to, it’s worth spending a few minutes to double-check — there may well be extra money you’re missing out on.

Might this be you?

Common questions

What people ask us about the benefit checker.

Is the benefit checker free?

Yes — it’s completely free, and you don’t need to give your name or contact details. It’s run by Independent Age, a charity offering clear, free and impartial advice on care, money, benefits, health and mobility.

How long does it take?

Just a few minutes. You answer a short set of questions about your situation and finances, and it tells you which benefits you may be able to claim — and roughly how much you could receive.

I think I already claim everything — is it worth checking?

It is. A great deal of benefit money goes unclaimed every year because people assume they’re not eligible. Even if you think you’re getting everything you’re entitled to, a few minutes double-checking is time well spent.

What if I need help making a claim?

Age UK, Independent Age and Citizens Advice all offer free help with benefit claims, including the Attendance Allowance form, which many people find hard to complete well. If you’d like a starting point, give us a call and we’ll happily point you in the right direction.

Ready when you are

Not sure where to start?

Run the checker first, and if you'd like a hand making sense of the results — or working out how benefits fit alongside the cost of care — we're always happy to talk it through.
