The Independent Age benefit checker is a simple, free-to-use, independent and impartial online tool. You tick the statements that apply to your situation, answer a few short questions, and it tells you which benefits you may be eligible to claim.
Even if you think you’re already getting everything you’re entitled to, it’s worth spending a few minutes to double-check — there may well be extra money you’re missing out on.
Answer yes to any one of the following and you may be eligible for extra money you’re not currently receiving.
You’re on a low income.
You have a long-term illness or disability.
You need help with personal care tasks such as washing, dressing or eating.
You care for someone who has a disability.
The checker is hosted by Independent Age. It asks a few simple questions, then shows you the benefits you may be entitled to receive, with clear guidance on each. It’s free, confidential, and takes only a few minutes.
The checker covers the main benefits and forms of support available to older people and those receiving care, including:
Pension Credit
Winter Fuel Payment
Attendance Allowance
Personal Independence Payment
Local welfare assistance and the Social Fund
Grants from charities for people on a low income
Social care support
Carer's Allowance
Yes — it’s completely free, and you don’t need to give your name or contact details. It’s run by Independent Age, a charity offering clear, free and impartial advice on care, money, benefits, health and mobility.
Just a few minutes. You answer a short set of questions about your situation and finances, and it tells you which benefits you may be able to claim — and roughly how much you could receive.
It is. A great deal of benefit money goes unclaimed every year because people assume they’re not eligible. Even if you think you’re getting everything you’re entitled to, a few minutes double-checking is time well spent.
Age UK, Independent Age and Citizens Advice all offer free help with benefit claims, including the Attendance Allowance form, which many people find hard to complete well. If you’d like a starting point, give us a call and we’ll happily point you in the right direction.
Run the checker first, and if you'd like a hand making sense of the results — or working out how benefits fit alongside the cost of care — we're always happy to talk it through.
